Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by a feeling of extreme restlessness and an overwhelming need to be in constant motion.
At its core, it stems from an inability to remain still, associated with an unconscious need to “do” or “escape.”
I may also be performing other actions such as rocking while standing or sitting; lifting my feet as if I were going to leave; and crossing and uncrossing my legs while seated.
Akathisia expresses my inability to remain seated or still, comfortable, or calm in a given situation.
It can also warn me that I’m experiencing a situation I want to escape because it generates a lot of tension or anxiety, mainly manifesting in my legs.
That’s why I’m preparing for a quick reaction, as if I were warming up.
At the same time, I feel a certain powerlessness to change the situation, which increases my inner restlessness.
Sometimes, akathisia tells me about movements I’d like to make, but for some reason, I block them.
“I need to move, escape this, or change things.”
“This isn’t going in the direction it should.”
“I’m not going in the right direction.”
“I want to change direction now! But I can’t.”
In what aspect of life do I not allow myself to rest—in my relationship, family, work, etc.?
What situation do I want to escape or move away from?
It’s important to find ways to make decisions about movement or real change in life in order to reduce the physical need to move.
