TENSION HEADACHE, emotional and spiritual meaning

A headache represents a conflict related to excessive control, intellectual self-devaluation, and a disconnection between reason and emotion.

It arises as a biological repair response when a person is released from intense intellectual pressure or a sense of mental inadequacy.

The biological purpose of a headache is to curb excessive intellectual activity and obsessive mental control, thereby forcing rest and allowing for the repair of brain tissue.

The primary emotional conflicts associated with headaches are:

First, a conflict of intellectual self-devaluation: Feeling that one’s opinion or mental capacity is unrecognized or invalid.

Feeling unable to solve a problem, believing oneself to be “stupid,” or doubting one’s mental ability when faced with a complex situation.

Examples include: “I’m not smart enough for this,” “I did something stupid and am judging myself harshly,” or “No matter how much I think about it, I can’t find a way out and feel powerless.”

“This situation is madness; if I keep trying to make sense of it, I’ll go crazy.”

Second, a conflict involving excessive control: Over-rationalizing situations—attempting to understand or resolve everything intellectually—while suppressing emotions.

Examples include: “I have to bow my head and accept this, even though I don’t want to,” or “If I don’t control everything myself, things will go wrong; I can’t trust anyone.”

A conflict of direction: Obsessive doubts regarding which path to take in life, where to go, or which decision is the right one.

Headaches can also arise from external pressure—such as situations where one feels compelled to perform at one’s peak or please others.

Similarly, another conflict that can trigger this symptom is emotional resistance: attempting to suppress or stifle one’s feelings by relying on logic.

A conflict arises between what the heart dictates (emotion) and what the head dictates (reason).

“My head tells me to stay for the sake of security, but my heart is screaming at me to leave. Not knowing what to do, I rack my brain until it hurts.”

Finally, there is the issue of conflict with authority: the head also represents the “boss,” a father figure, or an authority figure.

It may reflect forced submission or unexpressed rebellion against imposed rules.

Fear of the future or of making the wrong decision: This underlying tension manifests as mental torture before choosing a path: “If I make the wrong choice, the consequences will be catastrophic. I have to calculate every single detail.”

Meaning of the pain based on its location:

Frontal pain—conflict regarding anticipation and fear of what lies ahead: “I’m afraid of what tomorrow brings,” “I don’t know what I’ll face when I get to work or home,” or “I need to plan the future perfectly so nothing goes wrong.” This type is more closely linked to work.

Lateral pain (temples): Territory conflict and nearby threats: Associated with disputes or tensions involving people very close to you (partner, coworkers). “I feel my space is being invaded, or that the enemy is right beside me and I must stay alert.” This relates more to the emotional realm.

When pain affects the back of the neck or the crown of the head: Conflict regarding submission, guilt, and judgment:

The neck bows in surrender. “I am forcing myself to bow my head to someone (boss, parent, partner) and feel deep anger at not rebelling,” or “I am afraid of being judged for my past.”

If the pain is located behind the eyes: Conflict of “not wanting to see”: “There is a situation in my life that is unbearable to look at; I would prefer to close my eyes and have it disappear.”

Questions for introspection:

What situation am I desperately trying to control that is slipping out of my hands?

Am I demanding too much of myself intellectually, or do I feel judged for my abilities?

Is there a thought I have that does not align with what I truly feel?

What emotion (such as anger or fear) am I trying to suppress through logic?
