The vagus nerve, the secret thread that connects your brain to your calm.
Deep within your body is a master cable, invisible but powerful, that runs from your brain to your most vital organs.
It’s called the vagus nerve, and although its name may sound strange, its impact on your well-being is immense.
This nerve—the tenth of the cranial nerves—is like a two-way highway between your mind and your body.
It regulates heart rate, digestion, breathing, inflammation, and even participates in delicate processes such as swallowing, speaking, and vomiting.
It is the messenger of the parasympathetic system, that part of the nervous system that helps us relax, heal, and restore ourselves.
When the vagus nerve is active, your body enters “calm mode.”
Blood pressure drops, blood sugar is regulated, digestion improves, and your brain feels safe.
Therefore, activating it is like sending a signal to your entire body that it is safe.
And the best part is that you can stimulate the vagus nerve naturally, without pills, without technology, just with small conscious actions:
– Breathe deeply and slowly, letting your abdomen rise and fall like a calm wave.
– Humming, singing, praying softly… the vibrations that run through your throat awaken the lazy feeling.
– Splash cold water on your face or apply a cool towel to your neck.
– Gargle.
– Place your left hand on your neck, touching the beginning of your spine (cervical spine), and your right hand on your forehead. You can say the mantra OM at the same time.
– Improve your upright posture (align your head with your chest and spine).
– Roll your tongue, touching the entire outside of your teeth and cheeks, as if you were trying to assess the condition of each tooth, first to one side and then to the other.
Start gently because you may feel pain from accumulated muscle tension.
– Meditate, give thanks, walk slowly, caress someone you love.
– Gently massage behind your ears or on the side of your neck.
– And, above all, connect calmly and safely, with others and with yourself.
Activating the vagus nerve is an act of self-love.
You can’t see it, but you can feel it. It’s a way of telling your body, “You’re safe.”
And when your body believes it, it begins to heal.
