HICCUPS, emotional and spiritual meaning

by | Nov 24, 2025 | Diseases of the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Hiccups are an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm that causes, several times a minute, a brief, sudden and usually noisy inspiration.

It is a generally benign and transitory problem, usually lasting only a few minutes, although in some rare cases, it can last for days or weeks.

The hiccups express to us that, a minute before; we have just experienced an event that we do not want to stop.

The person has the need to slow down a situation or event that he is experiencing at that moment.

For example, it is typical of a person who is drinking alcohol and is already drunk.

The body is telling him that he should stop drinking, but since he can’t do it and continues to drink, that’s when the hiccups appear.

Hiccups are mainly manifested in people who have difficulty stopping something, to stop doing something.

We want to stop time, for example: My boss came in and I had to stop laughing.

There was a knock on the door and I had to stop eating.

“I have the right to live on condition that time slows down”,

“Everything is going very fast”, “Wait, wait, I didn’t understand”,

“How do they stop me like that?  “I was doing very well”

In the same way, you can suffer hiccups in contradictory situations, when I don’t know what to choose, when I find myself between two options, when one of them produces a certain displeasure and I don’t digest it: “Oh, I was wrong, I hope they don’t tell me anything”, “I am unable to tell you that I did not want this, that I preferred something else”

Hiccups also speak of mental agitation, unspeakable sobs, contained laughter, feelings hurt by wishes or ideas that have not been realized, etc.

The next time you have the hiccups, you can start by observing your thoughts:

What is it that is difficult for you to stop right now? If you put your mind to it, you can stop.

What confuses you?

Are you judging yourself?

Do you feel at a crossroads?

If the thoughts stop, if the mental agitation subsides, the hiccups disappear naturally.

Being unable to say “no” is a learned behavior that often functions as an emotional defense mechanism. At a deep psychological level, your mind has come to associate saying “no” with a threat to your relationships or your emotional stability; consequently, it chooses...
