Amnesia refers to the loss of memory, total or partial, of both past and present information.
Amnesia is a biological protective response to a painful or traumatic emotional conflict that the mind cannot process.
It is a form of adaptation; the body expresses what the mind could not manage, blocking the information to avoid suffering.
It is generally linked to an “escape from life” or an inability to defend oneself in a traumatic situation.
The brain “disconnects” the memory to protect the individual from pain.
Amnesia is the solution the unconscious provides to protect us from memories that may be too painful, to the point that they could incapacitate us from continuing to survive.
It represents an escape from reality, allowing us to block unbearable memories or situations of danger/helplessness.
The person with amnesia has a terrible fear of the present moment.
The desire to flee and “leave” is so great that they withdraw into themselves out of pain, anger, incapacity, or despair, becoming isolated and numb to almost everything.
I escape, I become lethargic, or I become insensitive to a person or a situation.
Amnesia can be a way to avoid feeling the unbearable pain caused by an unwanted and dreaded separation.
Or it can also be the consequence of all the unresolved grief from very painful experiences that we have been avoiding.
Similarly, amnesia can be triggered after a loss of identity (memory is responsible for generating and managing our identity).
We must keep in mind that even if we “erase” certain events from our memory, they will continue to act unconsciously, since the energy of the feelings involved will remain within us until we manage to confront them consciously.
The solution lies in identifying the initial emotional conflict and expressing the repressed emotion to release it.
From that moment on, whenever the conflict arises, we should simply observe it and stop feeding it with new thoughts. In this way, we will integrate the painful situation, and it will dissipate on its own.
