PSOAS MUSCLE, emotional and spiritual meaning

by | Jun 6, 2026 | Diseases of the MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM

The iliopsoas muscle is located in the abdominal cavity and the anterior part of the thigh.

Known as the “muscle of the soul,” the psoas is also considered a mouthpiece for emotions.

This is because the psoas is connected to the diaphragm (the emotional center) via connective tissue, or fascia.

To more accurately determine the emotional origin of a symptom, it is important to consider the part of the body where the discomfort is located—abdomen, groin, leg, hip, lumbosacral region, etc. —and connect its meaning with the meaning of the muscle itself.

The biological function of the psoas is hip flexion (bringing the knees to the chest) and pelvic stabilization.

In nature, when faced with imminent danger, this muscle contracts to do two fundamental things:

Attack or flee at maximum speed.

Adopt the fetal position to protect the vital organs in the abdomen if an attack is unavoidable.

Therefore, any symptom in the psoas muscle is linked to a situation that the brain perceives as a real or symbolic threat, where I am not allowed to escape, or I feel I cannot move forward toward where I want.

I am experiencing an emotional conflict of powerlessness and opposition simultaneously.

For example: I feel trapped in a job, a relationship, or a family dynamic that I want to escape from—I literally want to run away—but my beliefs or obligations compel me to stay.

“I feel compelled to go toward a contact I don’t want, or conversely, I feel compelled to flee from a relationship.”

Likewise, the psoas muscle can be affected when I want to take a new direction in life, but my desire clashes with fear of the future or with some external prohibition.

Another conflict that affects this muscle is when I feel compelled to go one way but internally desire to go the opposite.

This tension stretches and contracts the muscle simultaneously, causing injury.

Similarly, the psoas can be affected when I fear for my survival or feel threatened or unprotected economically, within my family, or in terms of my health.

Psoas major: When discomfort affects this area, it represents the biological solution sent by the unconscious to prevent me from engaging with something that seeks to defile or destroy me.

It can also express my feeling of powerlessness when I feel attacked simultaneously from multiple fronts.

Psoas minor: If I feel discomfort here, it indicates I’m experiencing sexual devaluation with my partner, with a hint of infidelity and deceit.

What situation or person do I want to run away from right now?

What decision or new path do I want to take but am held back by paralyzing fear?

In what aspect of my life do I feel my survival or basic stability is at risk?
