The tonsils are like sentinels guarding the gates of the throat.

The biological significance of the throat lies in passage, acceptance, and communication.

It is the channel connecting your inner world with the outer world, acting as your body’s “customs checkpoint”: it decides what enters and what leaves, on both physical and emotional levels.

Tonsillitis relates to the general biological conflict of “not being able to swallow the mouthful” or “not being able to spit out the morsel.”

The “mouthful” is a metaphor for anything you desperately wish to obtain or get rid of.

Main emotional conflicts associated with the tonsils:

First, the tonsils are affeected by a “catching the mouthful” conflict (primarily involving the right tonsil).

You feel intense frustration or anxiety regarding something you consider vital—something you feel belongs to you—yet fail to secure.

Examples include not getting a raise, missing out on a home purchase, having a contract cancelled at the last minute, or failing to gain someone’s attention or love. “The mouthful is right in front of me; it was almost mine, but it was snatched away or remains just out of reach.” “I desperately need to secure this (a job, approval, money, a partner, a goal), yet I feel it slipping through my fingers or being taken away by someone else just as I am about to savor it.”

Secondly, the “spitting out or rejecting the mouthful” conflict (left amygdala): You find yourself in a situation where you have been forced to “swallow” something you find intolerable, toxic, or unjust, and your unconscious wants to expel it.

This could involve having to accept a work decision you detest, enduring a humiliating comment from a family member, or living through a situation that causes you metaphorical “disgust.”

“What I am being forced to go through is indigestible; I need to spit it out and get it out of my life right now.” “I was forced to accept a situation that sickens me, and I need to spit it out or eliminate it immediately.”

The inability to get rid of something: “I am trapped in a situation (or with a person) that I cannot stand, and I cannot find a way to remove it from my life.”

Thirdly, the tonsils can be affected by a conflict of “repressed expression” (on both sides)—speaking your truth:

The throat houses the vocal cords, making it the center of verbal communication and self-expression.

Its biological function is to produce sound (an alarm cry, a complaint, the defense of your territory).

When you hold back your opinions, desires, or anger for fear of rejection or punishment, your throat suffers because you are blocking its natural biological purpose of expression.

For example, wanting to scream what you truly think at your boss or your partner, but holding back to avoid a bigger problem or out of submissiveness. “It made me furious to have to swallow that situation of injustice or frustration.” “I held back words filled with disgust, anger, or venom to avoid a major conflict, and now that accumulated filth is burning me up inside.”

For introspection:

“What is that thing I felt was already mine, only to have it slip through my fingers at the last moment?”

“Who or what am I clinging to so tightly that it’s wearing out my throat?”

“What situation, job, or person do I desperately want to break free from, yet feel unable to ‘spit’ out of my life?”

“What important thing did I keep quiet about for fear of the consequences?”

“Who did I want to scream my truth at, but didn’t?”
