Rhizarthrosis or osteoarthritis of the thumb, emotional meaning

by | Jan 27, 2026 | Diseases of the MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM

Rhizarthrosis also known as thumb osteoarthritis, this is a degenerative disease of the cartilage at the joint at the base of the thumb, specifically between the base of the first metacarpal and the trapezium bone of the wrist.

This joint is essential for performing pincer movements, indispensable for everyday tasks such as grasping objects, writing, buttoning buttons, or using a mobile phone.

When the trapezium bone of the wrist is affected, it speaks to a sense of devaluation in relation to someone I interact with at work, in my activities, in what I do.

They have deceived me, abused my trust, lied to me, betrayed me, taken advantage of me.

If the metacarpal bone (related to building, destroying, and survival) is affected, it indicates that I am experiencing a devaluation of my ability to perform well and thus secure my livelihood.

Similarly, it suggests that I have difficulty breaking what I have built, such as quitting a job, moving, selling a house, getting a divorce, etc.

If the sesamoid bone (related to deserving) is affected, it speaks to a devaluation of my position, the recognition I receive, and my salary, because deep down I feel I haven’t earned it or don’t deserve it.

“Someone gave me this position, this salary, arbitrarily, without any effort on my part, and I don’t deserve it.”

For the pain to disappear and the cartilage to begin regenerating, it is essential to identify and become aware of the emotional conflict affecting us.

At the same time, we can practice some exercises such as squeezing and loosening a clothespin between our thumb and forefinger.

Pretending to play the piano with all our fingers for several minutes.

Perform about 15 finger push-ups, opening and closing all the fingers of both hands simultaneously.
